Tarkan

From 1990 to 1992 Tarkan studied at the Üsküdar Musical Association, where he was able to count on the support and encouragement of some of the greatest Turkish musicians to make his way.Nevertheless, Tarkan decided to return to Germany, but it was during the preparations for his departure that he met Mehmet Sögütoğlu, president of the record company İstanbul Plak, still his record company today. His first work, Yine Sensiz (Again without you) is not a great success. He has to promote his record himself. In 1994, success came with his second work A-Acayipsin (Sei fantastica), which sold 2.5 million copies in Turkey alone. Suddenly Tarkan becomes a star and moves to New York in 1995, where he can finish his studies. It was during this period that Tarkan met Ahmet Ertegün (the founder and father-owner of Atlantic Records, also of Turkish origin) and began to consider the idea of working on an album entirely in English; the project, reworked and delayed several times, seemed to have finally come to fruition and its release seemed definitely planned for spring 2005.In July 1997 the single Şımarık (Viziata) was included in the album Ölürüm Sana (Morirei per te) which took two years of work. The album boasts the cooperation of Sezen Aksu, considered one of the greatest Turkish artists, and Ozan Çolakoğlu.Internationally, Ölürüm Sana sells 3.5 million copies. Tarkan then undertakes a long tour through Europe and Latin America to promote his music by performing in 18 concerts in 17 different cities. At the height of his fame, Tarkan was recalled to his homeland for his military service; ignoring the order, he continued his tour of Europe and for this reason was deprived of his citizenship and judged a deserter. Afterwards, a fine and a single month of military service allowed him to regain his citizenship and be acclaimed again at home.A singer little or not at all known in Italy, Tarkan – according to critics – knows how to blend with captivating skill sounds and instruments of the Turkish tradition with rhythms completely western. A phenomenon admired in Turkey by the new generation, it has revolutionized the rigid schemes of tradition because of its performances on stage, full of movements and winks. Accused from many quarters of attitudes contrary to morals (homosexuality, bisexuality), he makes good use of the accusations to increase his popularity.
